Dr. Theresa Tam Says We Won't Know The Severity Of New COVID-19 Cases And Deaths Citing Slow Indicators

As Canada braces itself for the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Theresa Tam said that Canadians might be left in the dark on the range of deaths and hospitalizations transpiring across the country.

Canada's top doctor took to Twitter to let Canadians know that the extent of the recent spike in cases will go unknown for awhile citing issues with COVID-19 indicators. 

"Hospitalisations and deaths are lagging indicators, emerging one to several weeks after infection rates increase," Dr. Tam said.

The worry is that we have yet to see the extent of the severe impacts of rising case counts today.

As a result, she worries that Canadians have yet to see the impact or the rising case counts as of Saturday. 

This proves as bad news for Canadians as COVID-19 is still accelerating and spreading, according to the tweet.

Dr. Tam also says that our chances to prevent a large resurgence narrows with every day that goes by.

As of 7 p.m. ET on October 2, Canada reported 2124 new cases of COVID-19 and 90 new deaths across the country, however, 74 of them, reported by Ontario actually occurred in the spring and summer.
