Canada's Top Doctors Admit The Latest COVID-19 Figures Are 'Concerning'

The country’s top doctors have spoken out about Canada’s latest COVID-19 figures. The Chief Public Health Officer acknowledged that the current case-count is “of course concerning” and addressed the need for more testing centres. This comes as regions across the country have reported alarming spikes.

At a press conference on September 15, Canada’s top doctors spoke about the country’s rising number of COVID-19 cases and urged people to remain vigilant when it comes to following health guidelines. 

Acknowledging the latest figures, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam admitted that the situation is “of course concerning.”

She went on to remind Canadians that the new cases are a result of “what happened in the last couple of weeks” and therefore urged people to remain vigilant going forward.

This, Tam added, could mean tightening our social circles again ahead of the fall.

"The key message is that the time to act is now across the board in terms of reducing some of the contacts you’ve had over the summer months," she explained.

It was a message backed-up by the deputy chief public health officer, who linked social gatherings to several recent outbreaks across Canada.

Speaking at the same conference, Dr. Howard Njoo drew attention to outbreaks that had been linked to "private social events, celebrations and community events held indoors.”

He reiterated, “We must all act now to pump the brakes on this acceleration.”

Their comments come as Canada reported 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, over 400 of which were in Alberta alone.

Ontario has also experienced a recent surge, with Premier Doug Ford threatening to shut the province down if things continue to deteriorate.

The prime minister also acknowledged the national situation earlier this week. He urged Canadians to continue to follow public health advice to avoid a fall lockdown.

As Canadians across the country have reported long lines and lengthy waits at COVID-19 testing centres, Dr. Tam also acknowledged the need to improve going forward.

“I totally agree with a number of comments from experts that we need to augment the portfolio of testing capabilities in Canada," she said.

"That's something we need to press hard at.”
