If you've been looking for new restaurants to try to get you out of that food rut, we've got just the list for you. Innovative, new and delicious restaurants across the country were put to the test and now we know which ones are the best. It turns out that the best new restaurant in Canada is in Quebec and it's pretty special.
A new list by enRoute, Air Canada's in-flight magazine, rounds up the top 10 best new restaurants in the country. A panel of food industry experts gave enRoute dozens of restaurants that were opened between late spring 2018 and June 2019.
Then one writer was flown to 17 cities across Canada, from coast to coast to coast, to dine at those restaurants and ultimately decided which restaurants would make the top 10 and which one would get top spot as the best new restaurant in Canada.
More than 30 restaurants were on enRoute's longlist and in the running to make the top 10 but, obviously, only 10 made the cut. They all have different cuisines and different takes on the dining experience.
"These are the Top 10 most innovative, memorable and downright delicious new restaurants in the country," the list stated.
The best new restaurant title goes to Arvi. The restaurant, located in Quebec City, has that industrial-modern vibe and is actually housed inside a former skate shop.
Arvi serves up veal rib-eye, oysters, foie gras, a bottomless plate of sourdough, a brûléed maple marshmallow and coconut espuma dessert and has an impressively long list of alcohol for people to enjoy.
But the most special part of the restaurant is that it has a completely open kitchen. So there's no separation between the diners and the cooks.
They even bring your food to your table themselves right after they cooked it.
"We wanted to get away from that kind of stuffy gastronomy and bring a more human side," Julien Masia, chef at Arvi, told enRoute about the open kitchen design.
The list features restaurants from three provinces and one territory. With such varying cuisines that are great in their own right, choosing just one for the top spot must've been a feat.
But the other restaurants on the list deserve some love too.
Pluvio Restaurant + Rooms in Ucluelet, B.C. also made the list. The uniqueness of Pluvio comes from the combination of dining and accommodation.
The restaurant uses only the best local products from Ucluelet, Tofino and Vancouver Island and even its own backyard garden.
The boutique hotel is behind the restaurant and the rooms overlook the garden. The hotel just opened in July 2019 and is called a "quiet oasis in the centre of town."
So after you've had a nice, filling meal, you can head over to your room and relax before heading out on the town.
Wayfarer Oyster House in Whitehorse also made the list and is the perfect stop for fish lovers.
The restaurant offers oysters, obviously, but also so much more than that like mussels, beef tartare, seared scallops and mains that are told the old fashioned way, on chalkboards.
Every single dish on the menu is centred around local produce from traditional farmers. The restaurant is popular among locals and is a place where everyone knows everyone.
And the washroom has wallpaper that's made of pages from Moby Dick and Gulliver’s Travels. Now that's unique.
Ontario has four restaurants on the list which is the most of any province. B.C. is a close second though with three restaurants on the list. Quebec has two and Yukon has one.
While the restaurants on this top 10 list aren't the only good new restaurants in Canada, you can be sure that you're getting a truly incredible dining experience if you go to one of them.
