The 'World's Largest Dinosaur' Is In Alberta & It's Getting A Fresh Look For Summer
This little town in Alberta is home to a big secret. Drumheller, known as the "dinosaur capital of the world," is home to the world's largest dinosaur. Now, just in time for summer, the colossal creature is getting a fresh look and you can see it soon.
The iconic landmark stands at roughly 25 metres tall — almost twice as tall as the 13-metre tall brachiosaurus — and weighs roughly 65 tonnes. It's actually 4.5 times bigger than the actual T-rexes it was modelled after!
It's made from a steel framework, with an outside coating of fibreglass and paint. You can even step inside the creature and take the 106 stairs in its belly to reach the mouth, where you'll be greeted with stunning views of the surreal-looking badlands.
Now, this giant lady (she's a lady by the way) is getting a total makeover this summer. According to CTV, a team of painters and carpenters will be working for three weeks to return her to glory. Unfortunately, she's closed for the time being while she gets painted.
The dinosaur's so big that CBC says the whole process will cost over $300,000 to finish. However, they won't be changing her classic paint job of green with yellow stripes.
According to the Calgary Sun, the dino hasn't had a proper paint job since 2013 and is in desperate need of a pick-me-up.
It will be closed while it's being repainted, but you can check it out later this summer.
Drumheller isn't the "dinosaur capital of the world" for nothing. Countless dinosaur skeletons were discovered in the region, and they've got an amazing museum to show them off.
