With new COVID-19 cases at an all-time high in Toronto in recent days, public health has had to put a pause on contract tracing.

The almost 700 workers in charge of contact management in Toronto have been directed to reprioritize their efforts to outbreaks in schools, hospitals, and long term care only.

Dr. de Villa explained the new strategy in an address to the city on Friday.

Residents who test positive will now be given instructions on how to reach high-risk contacts on their own, TPH told Narcity.

The health unit clarified that they will also "assess and confirm the person's ability to safely self-isolate, and make a referral to the Toronto Voluntary Isolation Centre if they cannot isolate safely at home."

On Friday, Dr. de Villa begged the province to consider closing indoor dining Toronto.

She also addressed the city's residents, asking them to stay home unless it's "essential" to leave.

Toronto has reported 20,662 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
