Police say one person is dead and another is in critical condition after a weekend fire in Barrie, Ont.

Investigators say they were called to Livingstone Street East and St. Vincent Street in the city's north end on reports of a fire around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

They say five people were in the home when the smoke alarms sounded, and three were able to escape without getting injured.

Police say a 51-year-old man went back into the house to help someone believed to be in the basement, and was seriously injured in the process.

They say he was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition.

Police say firefighters found someone dead inside the home, which was heavily damaged in the fire. They say that person has not yet been identified.

The fire marshal's office has been called to look into the cause of the fire.
