Alberta Says Christmas 2020 Will Include Zoom Hangouts & Distanced Outdoor Activities

The province's top doctor addressed the public with an Alberta COVID-19 update on Tuesday, December 1. 

With it being the first day of December, she addressed that many people are likely starting to plan for the holidays. To address the big elephant in the room that everyone's been wondering about, she said that Albertans will not be celebrating in a typical manner this year.

"We don't yet know exactly what restrictions will be in place during the last week of December," Hinshaw said. "Cabinet will make those decisions later on this month." Though, she did go on to say that Thanksgiving is an example of the damaging impact holidays have had on COVID-19 numbers.

Right now, I am encouraging Albertans to begin preparing for a much different holiday season, and to start thinking of creative ways to celebrate safely Deena Hinshaw

"This is not going to be the year for in-person office parties. This is not going to be the year for open houses or large dinners with friends and extended family. If you are making holiday plans, it is best to assume that you will still be limiting contact with anyone outside your household as much as possible, and that any large get-togethers will likely need to be virtual," said the health official. 

She said that this is the year for gathering virtually or organizing small outdoor activities where social distancing can be maintained. 

Hinshaw explained that what we do right now will impact the measures in place during the holidays. 

She iterated more than once that we should be preparing to visit mainly with our household members, as the current restrictions allow.
