Ontario's glittering amethyst mine is reopening and you can pick handfuls of purple gems

It's a true hidden gem.

Lead Writer, Travel

You might be familiar with pick-your-own flowers or fruit, but at this spot, you can actually pick your own gemstones. Ontario's dazzling amethyst mine is reopening for the season, and it's a sparkly purple dreamland.

Amethyst Mine Panorama, located about 60 kilometres from Thunder Bay, is a unique attraction featuring acres of glittering gemstones.

The mine is reopening on June 1, 2025, and allows you to hunt for your very own amethysts.

The "must-see" Northern Ontario destination is home to a 5-acre digging area that, according to the website, is "loaded with amethyst."

The amethysts come in four colours at the mine – purple, lavender, red and black, so you can discover an array of uniquely coloured rocks.

Once you've collected your amethysts, you can wash them off at the mine's cleaning station to make them truly shine.

In addition to amethyst hunting, the mine offers guided and self-guided tours which "highlight the history, geology and mineralogy of Amethyst Mine Panorama."

You can also head to the Welcome Centre where you'll find amethyst jewelry, gifts, souvenirs, food and beverages.

Digging for amethyst can be messy, so it's best to wear closed-toe shoes or runners.

Admission to the mine is $10, and the dig-your-own amethyst is priced at $5 per pound.

If you're looking for something fun to do this summer, this hidden "gem" attraction is worth digging into.
