Several weeks after Barack Obama's dog — Bo — died, the former U.S. president has opened up about their unique relationship and how the internet reacted to the news.

Speaking with James Corden on Monday's The Late Late Show, Obama admitted that he was surprised by the entirely positive and kind response from the public when he shared the sad news.

After Bo died from cancer on May 8, both Michelle and Barack shared heartbreaking tributes to their furry family member online.

"On our social media accounts, as you might imagine, sometimes the comment sections are less than friendly," the ex-president told Corden.

However, he said that while he often experiences "trolling" online, there were no nasty comments about the passing of his pup.

Revealing that "everybody" shared kind words about Bo, Obama added, "It did make me sometimes think gosh, if we could be as kind and thoughtful towards each other as we are about our pets, we would be doing a little bit better."

During the interview, he also explained how his family came to own the seriously fluffy Portuguese water dog.

"There's a well-known thing in Washington, if you want a friend, get a dog," Obama joked. "Well, you know, I got one because I needed a friend during the presidency who would be nice to me no matter what!"
