You Can Become A Superhost For Bees By Creating Your Own 'Bee-bnb' At Home

Would you get superhost status and five-star reviews? Bees in Canada are looking for places to stay and you can actually make your backyard into an Airbnb for them. While these pollinators would love to hang around, they probably won't pay you!

One environmental organization wants Canadians across the country to take on new roles as Bee-bnb hosts.

It's like being an Airbnb host, except all the guests are wild bees and other insects that help humans out.

By taking part, you'll provide five essential amenities for the pollinators. 

That includes growing native plants that are adapted to your climate, having flowers and shrubs that bloom from spring to fall, offering water sources with perches for the bees, and keeping little spaces for nesting.

The David Suzuki Foundation explains that mason bees like to nest in cavities, so keeping stems and woody material around is helpful.

However, bumblebees like to nest on bare patches of ground.

You'll also have to commit to not using any harmful chemicals like pesticides in your yard, in order to keep the bees as safe as possible.

If you don't have a backyard but still want to help, you can still do all of this from your balcony.

There are more than 800 species of wild bees in Canada that have been quietly pollinating our gardens, meadows and farms.

Now, the foundation wants Canadians to show them some love by having outdoor spaces dedicated to helping them out.

If you want to get that five-star rating and become a superhost, the environmental group will help you out by providing plenty of resources and guidance.

As if these pollinators haven't been going through enough already, murder hornets have been found in Canada.

These strange critters actually have the ability to decapitate honey bees. Yikes!

In October 2019, researchers from four provinces started to create a system to learn what stressors are impacting the country's honey bee population.

The project is developing a diagnostic tool for bees, to understand what's affecting them and to stop them from dying off.
