6 Canadian Hospitals Were Named The Best In The World & Over Half Are In One City

Go Canada!

It looks like several health facilities in Canada were named among the best hospitals in the world and more than half can be found in one city.

That's right — Canada is home to six of the world's top health centres and four of them are in Toronto, according to Newsweek's 2021 global ranking.

Editor's Choice: A Toronto Hospital Was Just Named One Of The Best In The Entire World

What is the highest-ranked Canadian hospital in the world?

The list highlighted 2,000 hospitals from 25 countries that stood out for their health care. This includes countries like the U.K., the U.S., Germany, and of course Canada.

The final list showcases hospitals that "stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology," the report read.

Toronto General Hospital came in fourth place on the list with a 92.60% score. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre followed suit in the 26th spot with a 91.28% score.

Mount Sinai Hospital snagged the 30th spot, followed by North York General Hospital, which came in 59th place.

Jewish General Hospital in Montreal broke the Toronto streak as did Vancouver General Hospital, both landing within the 101-200 spots on the list.

The list showcases hospitals that "stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology," the report read.

How do other hospitals measure up?

The ratings were based on a number of elements including recommendations from medical staff, patient survey results and more.

Outside of Canada, hospitals around the world showcased some very high scores and overall top rankings.

The U.S. stole the show with four hospitals in the top five; however, it was Canada that broke their streak with Toronto General Hospital taking the fourth spot.

Aside from those in North America, some honourable mentions went out to hospitals in countries like Germany, Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, Israel, France and Denmark.

All of those landed in the top 15 and proved their health care facilities remain strong, even amid the pandemic.

“As the events of 2020 made clear, our lives and those of our loved ones may rest on the kind of health care we have access to,” Nancy Cooper, Global Editor-in-Chief said.

“Of course we hope that we, and you, won't need to seek care or visit a friend or family member in any hospital this year. But if you do, this ranking of the World's Best Hospitals 2021 can help you feel confident as you make a critical choice about medical care,” she said.

What is the best hospital in the world?

The health centre that took the top spot was Mayo Clinic, located in Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.

The hospital describes itself as being in a “dynamic city,” and has cared “for patients from around the world for more than 100 years.”

According to its website, this facility provides “world-class health care."

While the United States was well represented in the list, it's important to note that the number of hospitals “awarded in each country varies based on the number of hospitals and data availability in the respective country,” the report explained.

For example, the U.S. had 350 hospitals awarded, while countries like Israel and Singapore had just 10 hospitals representing them.
