On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada's U.K. travel ban has been extended until early January.

The ban will be pushed by two more weeks because of the new COVID-19 strain found there that is believed to be highly contagious.

January 6 New end date of the U.K. flight ban in Canada

"We will extend this temporary suspension of passenger flights from the U.K. to Canada for another two weeks," said Trudeau.

"If you've arrived from the U.K. recently, the Government of Canada has been in the process of reaching out with more directions."

Originally, the federal government had put a ban in place for 72 hours, however, one expert believes that this travel restriction wasn't enough.

In his remarks, Trudeau also said that "this is not the time for a vacation abroad."

While British government officials believe the new strain spreads faster, they say there is no evidence at this time that it's any deadlier.

The CEO of BioNTech, Ugur Sahin, has also said that it is "highly likely" that the Pfizer vaccine is effective against this strain.

"We have scientific confidence that the vaccine might protect but we will only know it if the experiment is done," said Sahin.
