Texas may soon allow driver's licenses to be accessible on residents' cell phones.

A new bill, dubbed HB 273, was filed by Democratic State Representative Terry Canales, and, if passed, will create a pilot program for digital identification in the Lone Star State.

Canales told KVUE News that he believes the state is behind on technology, and it's time to start taking steps in order to "prepare for the future."

If the bill is approved, the Texas Department of Public Safety would be required to start the pilot program no later than February 1, 2022.

Texas would not be the first state to dive into the world of digital identification, as Colorado currently offers an app to its residents that allows them to create an electronic version of their driver's license or state-issued ID card.
