A new month is just around the corner, and you know what that means — a fresh round of government payments you can get in April is about to hit bank accounts.

If you're eligible for the GST/HST Credit, you might want to keep an eye out, because the Canada Revenue Agency is sending out the next GST payment next week, offering a financial boost to lower and modest-income Canadians.

As the cost of living continues to stretch budgets from coast to coast, benefits like the GST/HST Credit can make a real difference. This quarterly tax credit payment is designed to help offset the impact of sales taxes like the goods and services tax (GST) and harmonized sales tax (HST).

This government payment can add up to a few hundred bucks a year — not too shabby for something you don't even have to apply for if you've filed your taxes.

Wondering if you qualify, or how much you might get this time around? Here's a breakdown of the April 2025 GST/HST Credit payment, how it works and when to expect it in your account.

What is the GST/HST Credit?

The GST/HST Credit is a tax-free payment issued every three months to help lower- and modest-income Canadians with the cost of goods and services tax (GST) or harmonized sales tax (HST). It provides a bit of extra money to offset the taxes paid throughout the year.

Some provinces and territories also offer additional amounts on top of the federal credit, so the total payment you get can vary depending on where you live.

Who is eligible for the GST/HST Credit?

To be eligible for the GST/HST Credit, you need to be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and not be tax-exempt. You also need to be at least 19 years old during the month before the payment goes out. However, there are a few exceptions if you're under 19 — you can still qualify if you're married, in a common-law relationship or living with your child.

The amount you receive — or whether you receive anything at all — is based on your family's income and size. For the current payment cycle, individuals who earned more than $54,704 in 2023 don't qualify. The income cut-off rises to $72,244 for families with four or more children.

How to apply for the GST/HST Credit

You usually don't need to lift a finger to apply for the GST/HST Credit — just make sure you file your taxes each year, even if you didn't earn any income. The Canada Revenue Agency will use your return to check if you qualify and calculate your payment automatically.

If you're newcomer to Canada, the process is a bit different. You'll need to fill out Form RC151 to register for the GST/HST Credit and the Canada Carbon Rebate. If you have kids and you're applying on their behalf, you'll also need to provide documents that prove their birth. Once that's done, send everything to your local tax centre and you'll be all set.

How much is the GST/HST Credit?

Your GST/HST Credit payment is based on your household income and family situation. Here’s the most you could get this quarter:

  • Up to $129.75 for an individual, plus
  • Up to $40.25 if you have a spouse or common-law partner
  • Up to $44.75 more for each child in your care ($129.75 for the first child if you're a single parent)

And that's just the federal portion — many provinces and territories also offer extra credits that get bundled into the same payment. It's worth noting that while the base GST/HST Credit amounts are set to rise this year, the updated figures won’t take effect until the next payment in July, when the new benefit cycle begins.

Is the GST/HST Credit taxable?

No, the GST/HST Credit is not considered taxable income. It's actually meant to help make up some of the taxes you've already paid throughout the year. You don't need to include it on your tax return, and it won't affect any other benefits or credits you might be receiving.

When are the GST/HST Credit payment dates?

The next GST/HST Credit payment is scheduled for Friday, April 4.

After that, the remaining quarterly payment dates for the year are on July 4 and October 3.
