Ontario Trillium Benefit payments for April go out soon — Here's how much you can get
Check if you're eligible! 👀

Ontario residents can get hundreds of dollars from the OTB this month.
April has officially landed — and so has a new batch of government payments from the Canada Revenue Agency.
For Ontario residents feeling the squeeze of inflation and tariff threats, the Ontario Trillium Benefit is back with its April instalment, offering support to folks dealing with high bills and everyday expenses.
Whether it's heating your home or keeping up with property taxes, this monthly government payment is meant to ease the load for lower- and middle-income households across the province.
The OTB is a monthly benefit payment funded by the Government of Ontario and sent out by the CRA. It's meant to help low- to moderate-income residents cover things like energy costs and property taxes.
How much you get depends on your income, family situation and where you live — and for some people, it could mean a few hundred dollars a month.
Here's the full rundown on the Ontario Trillium Benefit for April 2025 — including how much you could receive and when it'll land in your account.
What is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
The Ontario Trillium Benefit, or OTB, is a monthly payment that helps people in Ontario with some of the bigger bills life throws their way — like energy costs, property taxes and even the HST you pay on everyday items. It's a completely tax-free benefit aimed at supporting low- to moderate-income households.
While it's funded by the Ontario government, the Canada Revenue Agency takes care of sending the payments out.
The OTB rolls three different credits into one simple payment: the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Ontario Sales Tax Credit and, for folks living up north, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit.
If you're eligible for any of those, you'll automatically get the OTB.
Who is eligible for the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
To get the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) for April 2025, the first step is filing your 2023 tax return. Even if you didn't earn income last year, you still need to file — the CRA uses your return to figure out if you qualify and how much you might receive.
You also need to be 18 or older or have (or had) a spouse, common-law partner or child living with you. One part of the benefit — the Ontario Sales Tax Credit — requires you to be at least 19. Meanwhile, the other two credits have additional criteria:
- Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit: For people who pay rent, property taxes, home energy costs on a reserve or live in a public long-term care home.
- Northern Ontario Energy Credit: For residents of northern communities like Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Rainy River and others who face higher housing expenses.
If you're married or in a common-law relationship, the CRA will use both of your tax returns to calculate your benefit.
And if you're turning 18 before July, filing your 2023 return now ensures you don't miss a single payment once you're eligible.
How much can you receive from the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
There Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is made up of three separate credits — and each one comes with its own rules and maximums. The amount you receive depends on your income, living situation, age, how much you pay in rent or property tax and where you live in the province.
Here are the highest amounts you could get from each credit for the full benefit year:
- Ontario Sales Tax Credit: Up to $360 for you, plus another $360 each for your spouse and any dependent children.
- Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit: Up to $1,248 if you're between 18 and 64, or up to $1,421 if you're 65 or older. You could also receive an extra $277 if you live on a reserve or in a public long-term care home, and $25 more if you lived in a school residence in 2023.
- Northern Ontario Energy Credit: Up to $180 for individuals, or $277 for families.
The Canada Revenue Agency adds everything up and splits your total into 12 monthly payments. But if your yearly amount is $360 or less, you'll get it all in one lump sum in July.
When do Ontario Trillium Benefit payments go out?
The next Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) payment is coming next week, on Thursday, April 10. OTB payments usually land on the 10th of each month — unless that falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case the money shows up a little earlier.
If you're receiving monthly payments, here are the other upcoming OTB dates still to come for the 2024 benefit year:
- May 9, 2025
- June 10, 2025
Don't forget — not everyone gets these monthly deposits. If your total OTB amount for the year was $360 or less, the CRA would have sent the whole thing as a single lump sum back in July.
