Why you should care: Earlier on Wednesday, a Globe and Mail report said five members of Hockey Canada's 2018 World Junior Championship team had been told to surrender to police regarding an incident that happened after a championship game that year. The allegations first emerged in a lawsuit that Hockey Canada settled on behalf of the players, per a TSN report in 2022.

In the lawsuit a woman, who has not been identified, alleged that eight hockey players, including members of the 2018 World Junior Championship hockey team, sexually assaulted her in a hotel room after a Hockey Canada event.

No suspects have been named and no charges have been filed at this point.

What they are saying: Narcity reached out to London police for a comment regarding the Globe and Mail report. A spokesperson for the detachment said they would not be commenting at this time.

"We are unable to provide an update at this time. When there is further information to share regarding this investigation, we will be in contact with media outlets," Sergeant Sandasha Bough told Narcity via email.

Later on Wednesday, police posted a notice of an anticipated press conference on February 5 to discuss the investigation after seeing "significant public interest" in the 2018 case.

Also on Wednesday, Canada's Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough addressed the Hockey Canada sex assault case on X.

"Abuse of any kind has no place in our sport system—not on our fields, in our rinks, in the locker room, anywhere," she tweeted.

ICYMI: Many players who were on that team's roster denied any involvement in statements issued in July 2022.
