How does Lotto Max work?

Lotto Max is one of Canada's biggest lottery games, with draws happening twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

For $5, you get three sets of seven numbers, each ranging from 1 to 50. During the draw, seven main numbers and one bonus number are selected at random. You’ll need to match at least three numbers to start winning prizes, and in certain categories, matching the bonus number can increase your payout.

Prize amounts vary based on ticket sales and are divided into multiple tiers. Here's a typical breakdown of prizes:

  • 7/7 (jackpot) — average of $47.5 million (but an estimate of that draw's jackpot is shown when you buy your ticket)
  • 6/7 plus bonus — average of $194,405
  • 6/7 — average of $4,629
  • 5/7 plus bonus — average of $926
  • 5/7 — average of $105
  • 4/7 plus bonus — average of $50
  • 4/7 — $20 fixed prize
  • 3/7 plus bonus — $20 fixed prize
  • 3/7 — free play

The Lotto Max jackpot starts at $10 million and can grow to a maximum of $80 million if no one wins. Once the jackpot reaches $50 million, additional $1 million Maxmillions prizes come into play, each with its own separate draw. If you want to win a Maxmillions prize, you'll need to match all seven numbers in one of those individual draws. Each time the jackpot is won, it starts back over again at $10 million.

Each set of numbers on your ticket is entered into both the main draw and, if available, any Maxmillions draws. To win a Maxmillions prize, you need to match all seven numbers on one line. Sales close at 10:30 p.m. ET on draw nights.

The odds of hitting the jackpot are roughly 1 in 33 million, but your chances of winning any prize are much better at about 1 in 7.
