How does Lotto Max work?

Lotto Max is one of Canada’s biggest lottery games, with draws taking place twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

For every $5 play, you get three sets of seven numbers ranging from 1 to 50.

To score a prize, you’ll need to match anywhere from three to seven numbers in a single set with the winning numbers. Some prize tiers also make use of a bonus number drawn alongside the regular numbers.

Prizes are based on ticket sales and are shared among winners in each prize category. Here's a typical breakdown of the winnings you could land by matching numbers:

  • 7/7 — jackpot (an average of $47.5 million)
  • 6/7 plus bonus — an average of $194,405
  • 6/7 — an average of $4,629
  • 5/7 plus bonus — an average of $926
  • 5/7 — an average of $105
  • 4/7 plus bonus — an average of $50
  • 4/7 — $20 fixed prize
  • 3/7 plus bonus — $20 fixed prize
  • 3/7 — free play

The Lotto Max jackpot kicks off at $10 million and continues to grow each time it’s not won, up to a maximum of $80 million. When the jackpot reaches $50 million, Maxmillions come into play — additional $1 million prizes that can be won.

All three sets of numbers you get with your $5 ticket are entered into both the main draw and any Maxmillions draws. To win a Maxmillions prize, all seven numbers must match one of the Maxmillions draw selections.

You can buy tickets up until 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the days of the draws.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 33,294,800, and your overall chances of winning any prize are about 1 in 7.
