Reports have begun pouring in about a new mystery illness in India that has apparently led to the hospitalization of over 500 people since Saturday, December 5.

The illness is reportedly located in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and is responsible for one fatality thus far, says the Associated Press

It was detected when people began convulsing unexpectedly. Other symptoms include nausea, anxiety, and loss of consciousness.

546 People admitted to the hospital

While the majority of those people have recovered and gone home, 149 are still being treated.

Experts from around the country have travelled to the city. While a theory about the illness's origin is that it stems from pesticides on food, Geeta Prasadini, the director of public health, says that "nobody knows" for sure.

Associated Press reports that there isn't a link between everyone who has gotten sick and they've all tested negative for COVID-19 and other viral diseases. They're unrelated, of different ages, and all from different areas.

The individual who passed away was 45-years-old and his symptoms reportedly mimicked those of epilepsy.

Researchers are investigating the hypothesis regarding tainted pesticides on produce and the possibility of the case being contaminated drinking water has already been ruled out.
