Vancouver Aquarium's Closure Next Week Will Lay Off Over 200 People
It's "one of the most financially challenging times" in their history.
Other than saddening animal lovers across the city, thehas also resulted in hundreds of staff losing their jobs.
After Monday, September 7, they'll temporarily close their doors to the public; according to Ocean Wise, over 200 "full-time, part-time and casual positions, primarily among operational staff at the Aquarium" will be lost.
Total jobs lost
The decision follows an almost 80% drop in ticket sales on top of "visitor restrictions expected to continue well into next year."
They said they'll use this temporary closure to "rebuild and come back even better," though they didn't elaborate on whether those laid off will get their jobs back.
While the visitor portion of the aquarium will close, Ocean Wise's other conservation programs will continue — and their thousands of animals will continue receiving "world-class care," they wrote.
