It's hard to believe, but we're already over a week into August, and Ontario's weather will look to keep us guessing for the rest of the month.

After a slight cooldown to start the month, things are about to ramp up in a big way. Most of central and northern Ontario are now under heat warnings, and it's expected to hit a high of 32 C in Toronto on Saturday and Sunday. So, if you thought summer was slowing down, think again.

According to The Weather Network's August outlook, above-seasonal temperatures are expected to return province-wide through the next week. Southern and central Ontario will heat up fast, while northwestern Ontario continues to sizzle under persistent hotter-than-normal conditions.

August is notorious for pop-up thunderstorms and unsettled skies. With hurricane season heating up in the Atlantic, leftover storms from the U.S. could drift into Ontario. That means more heavy rain, strong winds, and even a risk of tornadoes.

By mid-to-late August, Ontario might get a soft sneak peek of fall. Watch for foggy mornings, cooler breezes, and dewy grass — just enough to make you think about hoodie weather. But don't get too cozy: another wave of heat is likely before summer lets go.

So, what's the vibe this August?

  • Rising temperatures and heat warnings.
  • A risk of tropical leftovers bringing storms.
  • Fall flavours are sneaking in mid-month.

However, those aren't the only conditions we're likely to see.

So far, August has also brought dangerous air quality to parts of the province. Toronto has seen some of the worst pollution in the world, primarily due to wildfire smoke. As of Friday morning, the city ranked eighth globally for poor air quality, according to IQAir, and those hazy skies are unlikely to clear up anytime soon.

For now, summer's still going strong, but with a few curveballs. Stay hydrated, and maybe keep a hoodie or rain jacket handy — just in case. We might even gently usher in the start of fall.
