Members of the Conservative Party will be waking up to a brand new leader on Monday morning. After several months of campaigning, Erin O’Toole has been confirmed as the head of the Official Opposition.
O’Toole, an MP from Ontario, secured 57% of the votes on the third and final ballot, while contender Peter MacKay took 43%.
“
I want you to know from the start that I'm here to fight for you and your family
Erin O'Toole
During his victory speech in the early hours of August 24, O’Toole addressed “the millions of Canadians that are still up.”
“I'm Erin O'Toole, you're going to be seeing and hearing a lot from me in the coming weeks and months …” he said.
The new leader also committed to broadening the party's base before the next election, promising a “home” to all Canadians regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation or background.
