The province announced Thursday that Ottawa is moving into Ontario's red zone "as a result of worsening trends" in the region.

The increased restrictions in Ottawa Public Health will come into effect on Friday, March 19 at 12:01 a.m.

Between March 10 and March 15, the case rate in Ottawa rose by 24.8%, to 46.8 cases per 100,000 people, the province states.

In the red zone, indoor dining and gyms are allowed to remain open with a limit of 10 people, however, cinemas must close.

Non-essential retailers are still allowed to have in-person shopping with a capacity of 50%, including big box stores.
