Ottawa Police Confirm A 2-Year-Old Boy Has Died At Petrie Island Beach

Ottawa Police have confirmed that a small child has died, after initially being reported missing. In a statement, police said that the young boy had died on Ottawa’s Petrie Island Beach. The child was two years old.

In a statement shared with the public on June 16, Ottawa police confirmed that a little boy had died on Petrie Island Beach.

Per the release, the local fire department, paramedics and police services were called to the area on Tuesday evening at around 5:30 p.m. 

They were responding to calls that a small child was missing.

Prior to the arrival of first responders, members of the public were helping to search for the boy.

“Emergency responders immediately began searching the area, including the water where Ottawa Fire Water Rescue located the missing two-year-old boy without vital signs,” the police statement explains.

The two-year-old was rushed to the hospital, where doctors attempted to save his life. Despite medical interventions, the child was pronounced dead on Tuesday night.

In an updated message on Twitter, Ottawa Police confirmed that the boy had drowned.

Ottawa police confirmed that “supports” have been put into place for the child’s family, as well as for the emergency responders involved in the incident.

The police offered their condolences to the family of the child, and also thanked the Ottawa locals who had assisted in searching for him before the emergency services were on the scene.

Officers will continue to investigate the incident, "as per police policy for the sudden death of a child under the age of five,” Tuesday's statement confirmed.

Petrie Island is a parkland and recreational area, located in easten region of Ottawa. There are two large public beaches on the island.
