Parts of the British Columbia Interior are set to see their first significant snowfall at lower elevations this season.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement covering Kamloops, 100 Mile House and parts of the Thompson and Chilcotin regions, warning of "very localized pockets of heavy snow" starting late Tuesday.

The weather forecast agency is predicting up to 10 centimetres of accumulation in some areas, with snow levels rapidly falling as low as 600 metres.

The statement says the snowfall is triggered by a low-pressure, unstable air mass over the region, and pockets of heavy snow will make for possible sudden changes in visibility for motorists.

Further north, a snowfall warning has been issued for Highway 97 northwest of Fort Nelson in the Tetsa River area, where up to 25 centimetres of snow could fall by Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada says driving on the highway is expected to be challenging, and drivers should prepare of delays due to possible rapid deterioration of conditions.
