Over 15K 'People of Action' stream into Calgary for the Rotary International Convention

Forget what you think you know about Rotary.

This year, Calgary is hosting a global event that brings together more than 15,000 people from across the world for a packed program of talks, performances, networking, and more, focused on creating a positive impact both in Canada and globally.

It's the Rotary International Convention, which will transform the BMO Centre, Scotiabank Saddledome and venues across Calgary into hubs of energy, ideas, and global collaboration between June 21 and June 25, 2025.

If you thought Rotary was something only your grandparents were into, you're about to see how far-reaching and forward-thinking the movement truly is.

In fact, many are surprised by the breadth of Rotary's work. Over its 120-year history, the membership service organization has consistently led projects aimed at bettering communities worldwide, even while younger Canadians remained unaware of its impact.

When founder Paul Harris invited three Chicago business acquaintances to collaborate and build friendships in 1905, he sparked what would grow into Rotary — a global network of volunteer leaders committed to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges and creating lasting change.

Since then, Rotary clubs have contributed to a wide range of humanitarian efforts. In 1985, Rotary made eradicating polio a key priority, and their contribution has helped reduce global polio cases by 99.9%.

Closer to home, local clubs are actively involved in various projects that enhance everyday life. They collaborate with community partners to create green spaces where people can enjoy nature and connect with one another.

Additionally, they support local youth through mentorship and literacy programs designed to foster life skills that contribute to academic success and personal growth.

Chances are, Rotary has touched your community, whether you realize it or not. After all, the organization's principal motto is "Service Above Self," a concept reflected in the millions of dollars and volunteer hours Rotary members contribute via sustainable projects to promote health, peace and prosperity in communities around the world.

Even with all of Rotary's history and impact, its contribution to global well-being continues to grow — from combating food insecurity to expanding access to clean water and beyond.

While the Rotary Convention in Calgary wraps up on June 25, 2025, Rotary's message resonates well beyond any one event. At a time when global cooperation and community resilience are more important than ever, Rotary brings together 1.2 million people of action (across more than 45,000 Rotary clubs) who are ready to act.

One of Rotary's biggest strengths is that, despite its size, clubs exist in many different formats and styles and remain deeply local, each with its own culture and focus.

Whether it's a traditional Rotary club, a Rotary e-club that meets virtually, a Rotaract club for young adults, or an Interact club for teens, there are opportunities for people of all ages to connect and contribute.

So, if you're ready to be part of something bigger — something built on service, connection and action — Rotary is ready for you.
