Sobeys Is Bringing Back Hero Pay For Employees Working During A Lockdown

It was "simply the right thing to do."
Contributor

Some workers will be getting a financial boost during the second wave, as Sobeys hero pay makes a return in some regions.

In an email to Narcity, the company revealed that employees working in areas that have gone back into lockdown due to COVID-19 spikes will be receiving a temporary bonus.

This could result in an extra $10 to $100 every week, depending on how many hours are worked.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our teammates’ efforts to keep stores open, shelves stocked and Canadian families fed have been nothing short of heroic. Michael Medline, president and CEO of Empire Company Limited

Workers in the province of Manitoba, as well as the Toronto and Peel regions of Ontario, will be receiving the bonus as they continue to work through their respective lockdowns.

"Our teammates continue to work tirelessly to keep our stores safe and our communities fed," Michael Medline, president and chief executive officer of Empire Company Limited (Sobeys' parent company) said in a statement.

"Launching the Lockdown Bonus, in the face of new government mandated lockdowns, was simply the right thing to do."

Increased pay for grocery workers was introduced early in the pandemic by both Sobeys and Loblaws.

However, Loblaws ended their program in June.
