With Florida schools set to reopen in August for the Fall 2020 semester, a new petition has cropped up calling for keeping The Sunshine State's schools closed until at least January of 2021.

Dave Finnigan started the petition five days ago, which now has 73,237 out of its 75,000 signature goal. A few days after its initial posting, Finnigan updated the post with a comment announcing that they received nearly 40,000 signatures in just 48 hours.

There is no way to keep students, teachers, staff, bus drivers and cafeteria workers safe if they report to school buildings.

Kevin Soto, Osceola County School Board member, told Wesh 2 that while he felt the fear was serious and legitimate, the district's reopening plan is supported by science.

Soto explained that the plan will allow families and students to choose between three schooling options, including face-to-face learning, digital learning, and Osceola virtual.

Earlier this week, Governor Ron DeSantis compared the reopening of schools to keeping Walmart and Home Depot open, which stirred up quite a discussion on Twitter.
