Leafs Players Reveal Why They Prefer To Live In Yorkville & Etobicoke
When most of us think of “making it” in Toronto, we think of owning luxurious downtown condos. However, according to the Toronto Maple Leafs, living in the city’s thriving urban core can be a bit overwhelming. In fact, several players on the team’s roster revealed that they have chosen to live in Etobicoke in an attempt to avoid the hustle and bustle of big city living.
In an interview with The Athletic, several members of the Leafs's roster opened up about where they live in Toronto. A few players even gave their reasons for choosing to live outside of the 6ix.
“I like that it’s just a normal neighbourhood. I’m not a big city guy,” Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin told The Athletic about living in Etobicoke.
“We have a nice, big backyard for the dogs and a nice place to stay when we’re here. Close to the airport and the practice rink. To get home, it’s only an hour and a half max. It’s a great location.”
Other players noted how they prefer to be closer to the Ford Performance Centre, the Leafs' official practice rink.
The centre, which is about a 25-minute drive from Toronto’s downtown core, is located at 400 Kipling Ave., Etobicoke.
“I can walk to the rink if I was really feeling it,” added Travis Dermott. “But I drive every day.”
Etobicoke isn’t the only place that Leafs players have started to call home.
A few are hiding in Yorkville as well. According to The Athletic, around 18% of the team’s players have made a home out of the city’s upper-class neighbourhood.
“It’s its own little town,” said Kasperi Kapanen. “It has a European vibe, which I like. The restaurants are really good. Good shopping. It’s a bit more quiet than downtown.”
Kapanen is originally from Finland, so it’s understandable that he would dig Yorkville’s euro vibes.
“I love it,” Zach Hyman chimed in. “I’m away from downtown but close enough. I can go north and visit the family. It’s not too far from Scotiabank. I usually drive. I’ve taken the TTC before, but I like the routine of getting in the car, usually know how long it takes.”
