Securing travel insurance during the pandemic just got easier. Air Canada Vacations' free insurance plan is designed to financially protect customers if they contract COVID-19 while travelling, at no extra cost. The new plan promises to cover both medical and quarantine expenses.

If you’re worried about contracting COVID-19 while travelling internationally, Air Canada Vacations is promising to have your expenses covered.

In a news release on August 31, the company revealed their brand new insurance plan, which comes totally free with select vacations to Mexico and the Caribbean.

The plan, which is offered in collaboration with Allianz Global Assistance, will cover any "emergency medical and quarantine expenses if COVID-19 is contracted while travelling."

All eligible customers who book a participating package after August 31 will be automatically covered by the insurance, at no extra cost.

Residents of Saskatchewan are not covered by the policy.

To get the free coverage, your travel dates must fall between September 4, 2020, and April 30, 2021.

Destinations covered by the offer include Antigua, San José (Costa Rica), Havana, Grand Cayman, Cancún, Montego Bay and more.

The full list can be found here.

The plan will remain valid even if the government has travel restrictions in place, Air Canada confirmed.

The plan includes medical coverage of up to $100,000 per person, per trip. This includes hospital costs outside of Canada, should you be diagnosed while you’re away.

Additionally, $150 per day is available to cover any accommodation costs related to an unplanned quarantine.

It's also worth noting that the insurance only covers COVID-19-related incidents, not other accidents or illnesses.

The purpose of the free coverage is to provide customers with “greater confidence to book their next dream vacation," says Air Canada Vacations.

The company adds that it wants guests to have “peace of mind” when it comes to possible COVID-19-related emergencies abroad.

Air Canada isn’t the only airline enabling Canadians to jet-off to faraway places this year.

Earlier this week, Air Transat announced 40 new international destinations launching this winter.
