Even if you don’t consider yourself a nerd, your entertainment growing up probably consisted of some certified classics such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and DBZ, especially if you were a 90s kid. But if memories of your youth don’t include The Lord of the Rings, well, sorry for your childhood. It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon though, and in Florida, there are even places where old and new fans alike will feel like they’ve just stepped into Middle Earth. So, grab your sword, bow, and ax and get ready for some Lord of the Rings adventures at these cool places in Florida that have hobbity shire vibes.
Rolling hills, tucked away homes, cobblestone pathways, and of course, those iconic round doors — you’ll forget you’re still in the Sunshine State at these fantastical spots.
While you may not be able to find any of these spots on a map of Middle Earth, they’ll surely transport you to another world. And for the wayward adventurer who’s tight on funds, most of these spots are super cheap to visit.
Not all who wander are lost, but we won’t blame you if you want to linger a bit longer.
Blowing Rocks Preserve
Address: 575 S. Beach Rd., Hobe Sound, FL
Bok Tower Gardens
Address: 1151 Tower Blvd., Lake Wales, Florida
Why You Need To Go: There’s nothing like circular entranceways to give you all the Hobbit vibes, and Bok Tower Gardens does that and more. Enchanting architecture, a "singing tower", massive oaks, and bright flowers all add to that fantasy world feel.
Crystal River Archaeological State Park
Address: 3400 N. Museum Point, Crystal River, FL
Why You Need To Go: This historic Native American site has 61-acres of burial and temple mounds, middens, and ancient oak trees. One of the trees sports a tiny wooden Hobbit-like door that leads to who knows where!
Florida Caverns State Park
Address: 3345 Caverns Rd., Marianna, FL
Why You Need To Go: This secret Hobbit door won’t lead you to The Shire, per se, but more like the Mines of Moria. You know, before all the Orcs took over. The door leads to a cavern of stunning rock formations that get lit up in a rainbow of colors. Let's just hope there’s no Balrog in there. Bonus points if you can find the secret spring.
Address: 11000 Red Rd, Pinecrest, FL
Why You Need To Go: Fans of the original book The Hobbit, which chronicled Bilbo Baggins’ adventures, will remember his run-in with the giant trolls that almost ate him and his Dwarf friends for dinner. Don’t worry though, the giant wooden trolls at Pinecrest Gardens are probably too polite to do anything like that. Probably.
Green Magic Homes
Why You Need To Go: Okay, so this isn't exactly a place you can visit, but it could be your place. If you’ve ever dreamed of living in your very own Hobbit house, that fantasy can become a reality when you commission a gorgeous dome house with Green Magic Homes. While it might cost you a few gold nuggets, it’s bound to be a precious investment.
