Why is it called Murder Kroger?
Contributor

Atlanta is home to several Krogers spread out across the city and each one of them has a stigma that has earned it a notorious name.

We picked 8 Atlanta Krogers with interesting epithets and dug into just how each one got its reputation and name. From Murder Kroger to Stinky Kroger, it's always something interesting.

Murder Kroger

Address: 725 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30306

Description: Atlanta's most infamous Kroger — known morbidly for several tragic crimes. Back in 1991, a woman was killed in the parking lot. Then, in 2002, a body was found in a car. In 2012, a college student was shot and killed next door at the Factory Lofts. And, in 2015, someone died in a daylight robbery gone wrong. In recent years, the location got a major makeover and was dubbed Beltline Kroger, but the notorious name "Murder Kroger" has stuck.

Disco Kroger

Atlanta Disco Kroger

Address: 3330 Piedmont Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30305

Description: This Atlanta Kroger opened up in 1976 and was one of the first 24-hour Krogers in the city. The "disco" came in 1980 when a lively nightclub called "Limelight" opened up right next door. Cue partiers making late-night visits to pick up snacks and thus Disco Kroger was born. Plus, there's now a super cool mural on the wall and it's a go-to Atlanta photo spot.

Krogay or Gay Kroger

Atlanta Kroger Krogay

Address: 1700 Monroe Dr. NE, Atlanta, GA 30324

Description: This Kroger was given its good-natured moniker due to its location in Midtown Atlanta, which is a cultural hub for the LGBTQ+ community.

Kosher Kroger

Kosher Kroger Atlanta

Address: 2205 Lavista Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329

Description: Due to its location down the street from the orthodox Congregation Beth Jacob and accompanying Torah school, this Kroger has an abundance of Kosher foods. The short walk also makes Kosher Kroger great for those who observe the Sabbath.

Hipster Kroger

Hipster Kroger Atlanta

Address: 1225 Caroline St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30307

Description: This location was crowned Hipster Kroger for the vintage-loving, thrift-shopping locals that live in the area. To put it simply, the neighborhoods nearby — Little Five Points and Reynoldstown — are two developing areas that have become home to a lot of hipsters.

Krobar

Krobar Kroger Atlanta

Address: 2452 Morosgo Way NE, Atlanta, GA 30324

Description: Also know as "Fancy Kroger," this location boasts an in-store bar so you can sip-and-shop your day away. It's also home to a Starbucks and a burrito joint so you could pretty much live there and be a very happy person.

Shi**y Center Kroger

Citi Center Kroger Atlanta

Address: 3479 Memorial Dr., Decatur, GA 30032

Description: A pun on its real name, Citi Center Kroger, this location has been around for decades and has earned a, well, shi**y reputation. It's not in the greatest neighborhood and it's known to have bad produce.

Stinky Kroger

Stinky Kroger Atlanta

Address: 900 Marietta Hwy, Roswell, GA 30075

Description: This Kroger is located right by a waste treatment plant, so you can guess how it got its name. Patrons can't avoid the foul smell wafting in from its stinky neighbor. It's more pleasantly known for its ample selections and super friendly staff.
