"This was an act of racist aggression."

On Saturday, December 26, it was discovered that a statue in tribute to the late Breonna Taylor had been vandalized and smashed to pieces in Oakland, California.

Now, the sculptor, Leo Carson, has made a GoFundMe to rebuild the statue and plans to donate any excess funds to Taylor’s family.

The sculpture of Breonna Taylor installed at Latham Square in Downtown Oakland two weeks ago has been vandalized and smashed.  GoFundMe

Breonna Taylor was 26 years old when she was killed in her home in Louisville, Kentucky on March 13, 2020. She was killed by police officers who entered her apartment, reportedly looking for her ex-boyfriend, says BBC

A statue in the memory of Breonna Taylor went up just two weeks ago in Downtown Oakland.

“After spending months creating this artwork it was incredible to see the community and neighbors taking photos and enjoying it,” the sculptor wrote in the GoFundMe description.

“The best way to prevent further damage would be to rebuild her in bronze. As an unemployed server this isn't something I can afford to do on my own.”

He said the bronze casting process will take months and the base will also need rebuilding to hold the extra weight.

The fundraiser has a goal of $5,000 and has already surpassed that goal by over $1,000 at the time of writing.

Over the past year, we’ve seen several protests and rallies against anti-Black racism. At those rallies, we’ve heard chants such as “say her name! Breonna Taylor!”

The plaque accompanying her bust says exactly that.

“Say Her Name Breonna Taylor.”
