California toy aisles could have a new look if a new bill goes through.

The bill, filed by Democratic state Assemblymember Evan Low, would prevent department stores with over 500 employees from separating children's toys and clothing aisles by gender, and even allow for stores to be fined if they refuse to comply.

If passed, store owners in California will have until January 1, 2023, to implement the changes.

Stores who may not meet the requirements will then have 30 days after receiving a written violation from the Attorney General to make the necessary changes.

If a store fails to correct the violation, they coud end up receiving a fine of up to $1,000.

In the bill, Low references an already existing law known as the Unruh Civil Rights Act, which states that everyone, regardless of their sex, "are entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges, or services in all business establishments of every kind."
