The Canada Workers Benefit Was Expanded & Now 3.2 Million Canadians Can Get It

The Canada Workers Benefit has been expanded by the federal government, making as many as 3.2 million Canadians eligible for the money.

On June 21, Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland confirmed that the refundable tax credit had been extended to one million more low-income workers in Canada.

Workers who are single and without children will be eligible for a tax refund of up to almost $1,400, while workers with families will be able to get up to $2,400.

The support aims to "help people and families who are working and earning a low income."

The Government of Canada describes it as a "sizeable" tax refund that previously left many low-wage workers out.

Who can get it?

Now that the eligibility criteria has been expanded, the benefit is available to those with incomes up to:

• $32,244 as single Canadians (without children)
• $42,197 as single-earner families
• $56,197 as double-earner families

Secondary earners in couples are also now able to exclude up to $14,000 of their working income when calculating the benefit, "allowing them to access a more generous tax refund."
