The federal government is biting back after Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for updates to Canada's travel restrictions.

In a tweet on May 21, Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair explained that Canada currently has some of the "strictest border measures in the world," which has resulted in a 95% reduction in air travel.

Responding to a letter from Doug Ford, which called on the prime minister to make Canada's border rules stricter, Blair said that all of Canada's restrictions are "based on facts and science."

He added, "If provinces like Ontario wish to see further restrictions on travel, they need to specify which of these groups they wish to restrict further."

Last week, Justin Trudeau accused Ford of "playing politics" and claimed the feds had attempted to work with Ontario but had received no response.

Around the same time, Blair called on the Ontario premier to "look at his data" and "listen to his health experts," before accusing him of attempting to "deflect and distract" from the COVID-19 situation in the province.
