Canada produces a lot of meat products, but Canadian pork is now getting a boost through its very own dedicated government agency.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced in a November 5 news release the creation of the Canadian Pork Promotion and Research Agency or PRA for short.

Its goal is to "support the competitiveness and sustainability of the pork sector," while also developing new research and promotional activities.

The country also has a similar agency dedicated entirely to beef, which has generated roughly $7.5 million each year toward the cattle industry expanding its market and sales.

The PRA will allow producers to take advantage of more market opportunities both at home in Canada and across the globe.

In 2019 alone, the Canadian industry exported $4 billion worth of pork products to 90 countries.

"We will continue to work closely with the industry to ensure our hard-working producers have the tools they need to thrive in the global marketplace," Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a statement.

On top of that, the agency will also work to "mitigate and manage" the potential risk of African swine fever with more on-farm biosecurity and surveillance.
