With Christmas in Canada around the corner, the federal government is trying to save the holiday and there's even a poem about the plan.

Minister of Transport Marc Garneau revealed he has officially cleared Santa Claus and all of the reindeer for travel to Canada on Christmas Eve.

Transport Canada posted a video of the minister reading the poem that's a play on "'Twas The Night Before Christmas."

"'Twas a strange kind of Christmas when all through the house, not a creature could visit not even a mouse. The virus had kept us all snug in our homes, we can't be together but we're not alone," Garneau said.

According to the government, Santa and the reindeer have taken safety precautions so that they can deliver gifts across the country.

Kris Kringle has been washing his hands, keeping a two-metre distance from the elves and wearing a face covering.

Transport Canada even validated his pilot license and is doing routine sleigh and reindeer inspections along with health and temperature checks before the sleigh takes off.

Dr. Theresa Tam has also chatted with Santa about the plan for Christmas Eve during the COVID-19 pandemic.
