Erin O'Toole's Latest Tweet Had Him Being Compared To A Canadian TV Icon

Even though there isn't an election happening this fall, it seems like the political attacks in Canada won't be stopping any time soon. Conservative leader Erin O'Toole recently put out his latest swipe at the prime minister on Twitter. The slogan he used has him being compared to a classic Canadian TV icon, and not necessarily in a favourable way.

O'Toole, who was elected to lead the party in August, has released a steady string of criticisms against Justin Trudeau on social media.

However, his latest one has people reminiscing about a beloved CBC show that ran for 15 seasons.

Editor's Choice: 'Downtown Canada' Tweet Goes Viral & The Girl Behind It Is Speaking Out

What was the tweet?

The message Erin O'Toole was sending out on Twitter called back to comments he made during his first speech in the house of commons, as reported by CP24.

The September 30 tweet reads, "I don’t think Canada needs another slogan, it needs a plan. Do you agree? We need to build back stronger, and the only way that can happen is with a united country."

It also included a graphic which referred to Justin Trudeau as a "poster boy," and said "Canada needs a handyman," accompanied by an image of O'Toole.

Some users pointed out that this could be construed as a slogan itself, but there was also another point of comparison to be made.

Who was he compared to?

After O'Toole sent out his tweet, 'Red Green' began trending on Twitter.

This was due to the fact that people were comparing the Conservative leader's message to that of the main character on The Red Green Show.

While the classic comedy program encompassed a lot of Canadian culture and poked fun at stereotypical masculinity, it was also known for featuring segments of its host taking on various DIY projects.

More often than not, these projects would be outlandish and totally unrealistic, such as turning a washing machine into an ice cream maker or converting a Cadillac into a backhoe.

Who is Red Green?

Red Green was a character created by comedian Steve Smith, who played him in over 300 episodes of CBC's The Red Green Show.

The program took place at Possum Lodge, where members would come to hang out, work on projects, and play the famous word game.

Red Green was known for his propensity toward using duct tape in all of his projects. He called it "the handyman's secret weapon," and it was the prime inspiration for the eventual Red Green movie, 2002's Duct Tape Forever.

The character and the show were also known for their catchphrases, one of which was, "if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."
