Seismic reports from the morning of Saturday, August 14, indicate that a powerful earthquake has hit Haiti.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit 12 kilometres away from the community of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and approximately 150 kilometres away from the capital city of Port au Prince.

At a magnitude of 7.2, the earthquake would be stronger than the devastating earthquake which hit Haiti in 2010. According to the USGS, 2010's quake had a magnitude of 7.0.

According to CNN, the USGS expects the event is likely to be catastrophic.

"High casualties are probable and the disaster is likely widespread," the agency is quoted as saying.
