A massive $500 million settlement in the bread price fixing class action lawsuit against Loblaw has now been approved.

So, here's what you need to know about the settlement, who's eligible to get money, and more.

This class action alleged that certain manufacturers and retailers engaged in "anticompetitive conduct" when pricing packaged bread from 2001 to 2021, and shoppers were overcharged.

Earlier this year, a national $500 million settlement was reached in the Canadian packaged bread class action against Loblaw Companies Limited and George Weston Limited.

On May 5, 2025, Ontario judge Ed Morgan approved that settlement in the Loblaw class action lawsuit, according to The Canadian Press.

This Ontario class action includes Canadians in every province and territory except Quebec. There is a separate Quebec class action that has a settlement approval hearing on June 16.

The settlement is a $404 million cash payment by Loblaw and Weston because $96 million has already been paid by Loblaw through the Loblaw Card Program.

It's expected that 78% of the settlement funds will be for eligible class members who are residents of Canada, excluding Quebec.

The remaining 22% of funds will be for eligible class members residing in Quebec.

People residing in any Canadian province or territory except Quebec who purchased packaged bread in Canada between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021, are automatically included in the Ontario settlement.

An online claims process will be set up for the Ontario settlement so you can claim compensation if you purchased packaged bread for personal use from 2001 to 2021.

If you already claimed the $25 benefit through the Loblaw Card Program, that money will be deducted from any compensation you get from this new settlement.

The amount of money you get will depend on how many claims are approved.

According to the distribution protocol, you will only get a payment if the amount of your approved claim is at least $5. That's because of the costs of the distribution.

Any approved claim less than $5 won't be paid out.

It's expected that approved claims will be paid via Interac e-transfer or by cheque.

If you choose to be paid by cheque, $2 will be deducted from the compensation amount to offset the additional cost of providing a cheque.
