Prime Minister Mark Carney is briefly pausing his election campaign as Canada and the world deal with the U.S.
He has promised to respond to Donald Trump's tariffs "with purpose and force."
While at a federal election campaign stop in the GTA on Thursday, April 10, Carney said he would go back to Ottawa "in light of the evolving situation" related to U.S. tariffs.
The prime minister will hold a meeting with Minister of National Defence Bill Blair, the Cabinet Committee on Canada-U.S. Relations and national security officials on Friday, April 11, according to Global News.
Carney's detour from his election campaign comes after Trump paused "reciprocal" tariffs on countries around the world for 90 days. Canada wasn't included in that round of tariffs, but the country still faces other U.S. tariffs.
The tariff pause is "a welcome reprieve for the global economy," Carney said.
But he noted that "the impacts of other tariffs and the threat of future tariffs are already being felt around the world and here at home."
"The stakes have never been higher for our economy," he said.
According to CTV News, Carney claimed that Trump "is looking to fundamentally restructure the international trading system."
He said tariffs are still "threatening our families, our workers and our businesses." So, he has promised to respond to Trump's tariffs "with purpose and force."
Also, Carney said he would start negotiations with Trump "immediately following the election" if the Liberals form government, Global News reported.
"We will ensure that the ground for those negotiations is constructive while we stand firm with our workers, protecting our workers and building this economy."
