Ottawa's Skateway team carried out a unique rescue mission after being notified about a stranded stuffed reindeer on the Rideau Canal.

The team first became aware of the tragic situation on January 19, 2021, when a photo of the snow-covered deer was posted on Twitter, with a cry for help in the caption.

Dominique Huras, strategic communications advisor at NCC told Narcity that a toddler tossed the stuffie onto the canal from the walkway.

Since the canal is currently closed, the family was unable to retrieve it.

Within hours of receiving the message about the stranded toy, a Skateway team member bravely headed onto the ice to find it.

It took some scraping and shovelling to uncover the deer as it was buried in a mound of snow, but eventually, it was located.

The team is in contact with the owner and are now trying to set up a reunion for the lost reindeer.

Huras said this is the first time anything like this has happened at the canal, and that it's lucky the stuffie was able to be retrieved safely.

"We really like these [...] happy endings during these times. Everyone needs a little sunshine during the day, and this was one we were able to help create."
