Ontario case counts have risen to record-breaking highs recently, and Japan is taking notice.

Japan included Ontario in a list of global regions with community transmission of COVID-19 variants of concern and has enforced a new set of travel restrictions on travellers from the province in particular.

As of April 9, travellers from Ontario must now quarantine for three days at a state-approved facility while waiting for COVID-19 test results, according to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If the results come back negative, a further 11-day quarantine period begins.

The same rules apply to travellers from the U.K., Brazil, Germany, South Africa, Ukraine, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Czech Republic and elsewhere.

As it stands, most foreign nationals travelling to Japan will be denied entry unless they've been given permission under "special exceptional circumstances."
