In a press conference on April 9, Dr. Theresa Tam revealed that the number of variant of concern cases reported has more than doubled in the last week.

She also revealed that one variant strain, in particular, is leading the pack, saying "to date almost 25,000 variants of concern cases have been reported across Canada with B.1.1.7 variant continuing to account for more than 90%."

Tam shared that this has been a factor in the increase of hospital and ICU admissions, which have both gone up by 7% and 23% respectively since the previous week.

She called for stronger measures across the country as "the race between vaccines and variants is at a critical point."
