York Region witnessed a dramatic scene on July 9, and two people are dead as a result. A Vaughan parking lot crash killed two after a vehicle flew off a two-storey parking lot and crashed onto the road below. York Regional Police are gathering evidence as to how the car drove off the platform and struck a female pedestrian.

At around 1:30 p.m., YRP reported a collision at a plaza in the area of 9131 Keele St., just south of Rutherford Road.

They followed up by noting that two people have been pronounced dead.

Police say the driver appears to have driven off a second-storey parking deck and struck a female pedestrian. Photos from the scene show a fence that has been smashed and has fallen down onto the sidewalk.

“There was a vehicle, a white Audi sport utility vehicle, that was in a second-storey parking lot for reasons that are still under investigation,” YRP Sgt. Andy Pattenden told CTV News.

“The vehicle drove across that parking lot, right over a fence and off the second storey and in the process struck a female pedestrian."

The woman died at the scene, reports Global News.

According to CTV, the driver, an elderly male, was found at the scene without vital signs. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but has since been pronounced dead.

"It's quite a dynamic scene," Pattenden added, per CP24. "Our investigators will be looking at all factors whether it be medical, speed, whatever it might be."

An elderly woman was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle but escaped the dramatic incident without life-threatening injuries.

YRP asks anyone with information or who may have witnessed any part of the incident to call 866-876-5423.

While the cause of Thursday's incident is unclear at the time of writing, this is the latest of several dramatic car crashes that have been noted in recent times, especially in Peel Region.

Last month, a mother and her three daughters were killed after a speeding driver collided with their car and sent them crashing into a post.

The investigation continues, at the time of writing.
