3 Children & An Adult Are Dead After A Huge Car Crash In Brampton

There was a tragedy in the GTA on June 18. A multi-vehicle crash has left four people dead and one man in a life-threatening condition. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and is now investigating the Brampton car crash that killed three children and a woman on Thursday afternoon.

UPDATE: At 5:13 p.m., Peel Regional Police confirmed that a third child, who had been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, has also died. That takes the death toll to four people.

EARLIER: Cst. Akhil Mooken told Narcity that police took a call at 12:16pm for a four-vehicle crash at Countryside Drive and Torbram Road in Brampton.

"At this time, I’m devastated to confirm that 3 children and an adult female have died as a result of injuries they sustained," he said.

Police had previously noted that two children and a woman had died, while the since-deceased third child and a man were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

However, by 5:13 p.m., the third child had also tragically died, per Cst. Mooken and police.

The adult male remains in life-threatening condition.

One of the children died right there at the scene, Cst. Mooken said, as reported by Global News.

"As a parent when I first saw this call come across, the first thing I could think of was my own daughter and trying to imagine if at all possible the pain that family was going to be facing,” Cst. Mooken added, per Global.

At the time of writing, the ages of the victims and the injured are not known, say officers. Nor is the relationship between the five people involved.

"We are going to be looking at speed, any factor at this point. We're not sure exactly what happened," Cst. Sarah Patten told CP24.

Mooken confirmed that Ontario's SIU is investigating the incident. Per the unit's mandate, he couldn't provide details.

The SIU's website notes the unit investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

It's not yet clear why the SIU has been brought in to look at this incident.

However, an eyewitness gave an unconfirmed account to CP24 in which she suggested one vehicle was moving quickly through the intersection, followed by a police car, when it hit another.

“He just smashed the car," she said. "My husband went over there and took the kids out."

The investigation continues.
