Everybody knows NBA players get paid the big bucks, but what about the off-court stars? Well, Nick Nurse's new contract proves that it pays to be a good coach. In fact, it landmarks the Raptors leader as one of the highest-paid coaches in the league. He even makes more than most of his players.

According to The Athletic, Nurse signed a lucrative multiyear contract extension last Tuesday, which will earn him a whopping $8 million per year.

The deal ranks the 53-year-old among the most elite basketball mentors, placing in the top five highest-paid coaches in the NBA.

Nurse, who helped win Toronto its first championship last summer, was awarded coach of the year for his efforts in the 2019-20 season.

Wayne Chandlee, Nurse's high school basketball coach, personally announced the achievement, which made Nurse get emotional.

His new salary may not exceed Kyle Lowry's, who made upwards of $30 million during the 2019-2020 season, but he makes considerably more money than many of the players on the team.

Per ESPN, Pascal Siakam and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson make less than $3 million per year.

Meanwhile, Fred VanVleet makes slightly more than his coach at just over $9 million a year.

Nurse, who is from Iowa, seemed more than pleased to be staying in Toronto after the deal was announced last week, calling the city "home."

"Toronto has been my home for the past seven years, and I look forward to it being home for many more," he said.

"I've watched this franchise grow and reach the pinnacle, and I look forward to the challenge of helping us win another championship."

"My family and I will always be appreciative of Larry Tanenbaum and MLSE ownership for this opportunity," he continued.

"I'm grateful to Masai, Bobby, and the players for their trust and their hard work."
