Over 20K Ontarians Are Demanding That March Break Shouldn't Be Cancelled

A final decision on the holiday hasn't been made.

An Ontario petition is calling on Ford's government to scrap its idea to potentially cancel March Break.

The request, which already has over 20,000 signatures, argues that children and teachers desperately need the holiday.

"The benefits of breaks for children, teachers and education workers have been researched time and time again," organizer Jennifer Grenier wrote.

"Breaks are important for mental health, physical health, economical reasons, productivity and much more," she adds.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, one of Ontario's top doctors, first argued back in January that keeping kids in classrooms in March would help contain COVID-19 case numbers.

He claimed that the holiday could lead to children not staying home and spreading the virus

However, Education Minister Stephen Lecce stated last week that the government was waiting on an expert opinion to decide the fate of the holiday.

Lecce is expected to make an announcement on Thursday afternoon at Queen's Park.
