Outdoor Dining & Fitness Might Be Allowed In Peel Region Even In The Grey Zone

Peel's top doctor is having "active discussions" to see if rules can be changed.
Staff Writer

The region's top doctor wants to change Peel's COVID-19 restrictions to allow for more outdoor activities.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh told reporters on Wednesday that he's trying to convince the province to allow people to enjoy outdoor patios and fitness without having to leave the grey zone.

"We are currently having active discussions that are exploring if we can maintain some of the protections afforded by the current measures that are enforced here in Peel," he said, "but consider adjustments, particularly where there is an opportunity to leverage the outdoors for things such as dining and fitness."

Loh said that the decision is ultimately up to the province, but he's factoring in the lower risk of transmission outdoors when making his recommendation.

He added that the region is looking to strike a balance between improving weather, vaccine supply, the growth of variants, and community fatigue.
